SO, I was working on improving the picture and getting a little frustrated because it was just a bit fuzzy. Then it hit me. I should probably put on my glasses! (I only ever wear them when I go out to the movies so I just didn't think about them at first) and yada.
Crystal clear picture! Let this be a lesson to everyone else. No matter how many adjustments you make, this model will not clear up any defects caused by your own eyes. By chance I was working with edge enhancement when there was a large typed page on the screen and setting edge enhancement to high made the type crystal clear as opposed to looking fuzzy when it was turned to off.

The difference was night and day. Just figured I'd mention that for what its worth. I'm a new 55HX750 owner checking in! The set is replacing a 40' XBR4 (which was working fine) in the bedroom/office. While 55' is big, if you recall the XBR4's had that 5' bezel around the entire display. The HX750 is much cleaner so the profile of the 750 is only marginally larger than the XBR4 (but with a much larger picture ). I've been agonizing over a replacement for the last week reading reviews and posts; it seemed so many people did not like the sets they bought.
I went to Best Buy and looked over the selections and have to say the LGs looked nice, but to me, I preferred the Sony. I went to the Quantico Marine Corps Exchange this morning and looked over their displays and again liked the Sony (in that differing setting), so it followed me home (thumbs down to the Sony UPP but at least I saved tax by buying on base). I set it up and started watching some random stations and movies and do believe this is a great picture right from the box.
I'm not a TV diva and don't even care to find out what flashlighting and clouding are, but I will play around with the settings in this thread to see if I can make a good TV better! The sound is no-where near the quality on the old XBR, so I think I'll pick up a soundbar; I also can't figure out how to get MLB.TV using the TV's internet so if anyone is using this set with MLB.TV please chime in.

The auto back light adjust seems to do a better job than on the older models but it's still there. What's also maddening is that Sony has the same old response 'Some models will be noticeably brighter in the corners, and it isn't something we repair at this time as it's normal and will fade over time'. I can't understand how there can be this variance level in panel construction where the company would completely refuse to address the issue across the board.
I mean.Is it just me that's seeing this? Are most people's eyes so bad that they don't notice this issue? Despite the fact that I know people with 2 year old XBR sets where this never faded away, does it really fade over time? Is there something wrong with my eyes? I'm sincerely struggling with understanding how this issue continues to plague most all LED sets I've seen(including the 2012's).
Now I'll be honest about the 'problem'. It's truly nitpicking and not something that most non videophiles would ever care about. The only time you see the issue come up is on sources that don't fill the screen(black bars on sides/top/bottom) and in a dark room. So if you don't do much of that sort of watching then you can probably(and should probably) just look past this issue without flinching because this is an incredibly good set.
Now the big question: Do I just deal with the things I dislike about plasmas or do I press start and begin the exchange game so to speak? I have a KDL-55HX729 that has zero flash lighting.
I would imagine as common as flash lighting can be, it affects a small percentage of sets. Otherwise, there would be thousands and thousands of posts for all TV manufacturers as it happens across the board. That being said, it does happen. My KDL-52EX701 has light leaks akin to flash lighting. It's not visible straight on but from angles and appears as blue-ish light leaks from the bezel. I have ignored it since it's only seen from standing up close to the TV looking down or looking at the TV from an angle (or from the floor looking up). This defect is only seen on a black screen such as a credit roll in a dark room.
My newer (12/11, KDL-55HX729 does not have this defect. It's what you can live with. If the TV is within your exchange period, why not return it if it bothers you? I didn't return the 701 because I was lazy and after a while ignored it since I watch this TV from a central position and it seems fine from that vantage point. I actually own the 55HX85 Taken from the review.
Gamma tracking was also much better and whilst we could have used the Advanced Contrast Enhancer to achieve an even flatter response, it wasn't worth it for the negative effect it has on black levels, i.e. It raises them I use these settings, Scene: Cinema Picture Cinema 1 (for a bright day i use cinema 2 with everything the same, bar backlight of 5+ Backlight:3 Contrast: 89 Brightness: 49 Color: 49 Hue: 0 Color temperature: Warm 2 Sharpness: 20 for blu ray as this is actually neutral, ie no edge enhancement and no softening of the image, 40 for tv. It's almost as if there's a mini flash light (I'm guessing this is how the term came about!) beaming downward slicing the middle of the picture causing the image to become brighter right in the dead center of the screen the quicker the scene moves, only to dim out almost entirely in non moving scenes. I'm still tweaking settings in an attempt to neutralize this. My 2007 Bravia almost has a better picture than this set. Warm 2, and light sensor should be on if it's on a dim room or well. If you want a better picture with real blacks!!!
Also, brightness should be at 50, so does color. Back light should go up to 5 for blu-rays, for tv content it may vary, minimum or 1 can be too little. Sorry I should have specified that I purchased the TV brand new directly from Sony's online store, so no worries there. The issue I am having is not the four corners of the screen edge light problems, I actually detail it in a few posts prior on this page.
I will copy/paste my issue: 'What is driving me nuts is some flash lighting that is unavoidable in almost every moving scene taking place in the dead center of the top of the set. IMO, if you purchased your set used or from an unauthorized source then Sony will most likely not honor the warranty. 'due to flash lighting issues' If you are talking about edge light then Sony does not consider this a defect. In closing, you can't make anything worst by contacting Sony Support.

If you don't have any luck with Sony phone support, I suggest you try contacting the Sony Team on Facebook, Sarah Kepler seems to be the go too person, or you can try emailing sonylistens@am.sony.com. I'm on my second TV exchange going through them, not because of flash lighting but other issues.

Just tell them you're not happy with the set and if it's possible to exchange it for the same or a different model. I just purchased the Sony KDL-55HX750 as a replacement offer from Sony Listens because of the optical block failure in my Sony KDS55A2020. I suppose I am giving this new TV a 4/5 partly because I received a great offer. After calibrating the TV (per input) and breaking it in a bit (40 hrs), I must say that I am very satisfied with the picture quality and features. Three questions though: 1) Are the people complaining about the 'flashlight' issues have the back light set to 5/10 or higher? I have my back light set to 2/10 and brightness set at 55. I do see some light in extremely black scenes but otherwise have no complaints.
Doing my research I see that this affects most LED LCD sets to a certain degree. 2) I have no problem with this TV's ability to connect to my wifi router and maintain a strong signal (using a Netgear WNDR3700 router). Maybe the problem is with your wifi router? 3) The speakers are weak.
Though I supposed that as thin as this tv is, it is sorta expected. Any soundbar/av receiver suggestions for this tv set would be great and very welcoming. I am no way a videophile and am partial to plasmas (Panasonic Viera), I must say that Sony has a satisfied customer with this tv set.
As Menu opens, select and open the ‘Settings’ option. As ‘Picture’ menu opens, press the down arrow to select and open the ‘Set-up’ option. Select and open Factory Settings option from the Set-up menu. Factory Settings menu will appear.
Select OK option and open it. A confirmation box will open, select OK option to reset all settings. This will restore the LCD TV to original factory settings. After restoration, you will be asked to do an Initial Setup for the TV.
Select your preferred language and location. Hope you find this guide easy and useful.
